Planning office: Time for drastic steps in climate change fight
The Netherlands environmental assessment agency PBL is calling on the government to make some drastic choices in order to reach the environmental targets set in the climate agreement in made in Paris last year, NOS reports.
The PBL's biennial report on the state of the environment was presented to the government on Wednesday. It advises the government to especially focus more on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Closing the coal fired plants and switching to renewable energy will not be enough, according to the report. More drastic measures are required.
According to the report, particularly concerning sectors are agriculture, aviation and maritime, where emissions are only increasing. If nothing is done about this soon, the government will have to start considering measures like underground storage of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses.
