Nijmegen cops give 87-year-old pilgrim a home cooked meal
Two Nijmegen police officers had a special lunch guest on Tuesday. They picked up an 87-year-old man busy with a pilgrimage from England to Eindhoven and offered him a hearty meal at one officer's home, the Nijmegen police write on Facebook.
The officers responded to a report of an old man walking along Wijchensweg on Tuesday. They found him close to the A73 exit and asked him about his story.
The elderly British citizen sold his house in England to make the long trek to the Netherlands - the same route his family took during the war. From England he left for France by boat, then walked over Belgium to the Netherlands. His final destination is Eindhoven.
On Monday night the man slept under the trees on Keizer Karel Plein in Nijmegen. When the police encountered him he hadn't had anything to eat or drink. "So officers Arno and Ramon decided to give him a good meal", the Nijmegen police write on Facebook.
They took him to officer Arno's home where he was given four slices of brown bread with scrambled eggs and cheese, including a large glass of milk. While he was enjoying his home cooked meal, the officers got some snacks together for the rest of his journey - gingerbread, apple, ice tea and water all packed into a backpack so it will be easy to carry.
"We gave him a map to map out his route and explained the map to him so that he doesn't end up on a highway again", the officers said. They then dropped him up, with well wishes for a successful journey, at the Airborne monument.
