Dutch cyclist killed in traffic accident on Sint Maarten
Cyclist Bas de Haan was killed in an accident on the Antillean island of Sint Maarten on Tuesday afternoon. He was cycling on his racing bike when he was hit by an SUV. He died in hospital a short time later, De Hart Van Nederland reports.
According to the Daily Herald, De Haan recently moved to Sint Maarten, where he got a job as physical education teacher at the Milton Peters College. He'd been working there for only a month.
Wim de Visser, director at Milton Peters College is shocked by he news. "Tonight the dramatic news reached us that our beloved colleague Bas de Haan, our physical education teacher, was involved in a tragic accident this afternoon on the Airport road and has succumbed to his injuries", he said to the Daily Herald on Tuesday night. "All of us, colleagues and students, that got to know Bas as an enthusiastic and dynamic teacher, are in compete shock."
"We wish everyone, especially his partner Susan and his family, much strength in dealing with this loss. We still cannot believe this is real. Rest in peace, Bas." De Visser continued.
De Haan was 27-years-old. According to DHVN, he enjoyed regional fame as a cyclist in the amateur squad with his brother Paul.
