Another Labour MP announces election time resignation
After over 10 years in parliament PvdA MP Lea Bouwmeester is leaving politics after the elections in March 2017, she announced on Thursday. "It's time for something different", she said, according to Dutch newspaper AD.
During her time in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, Bouwmeester tried to look out for the weaker members of society, she said. Still as part of a coalition, she and the rest of the PvdA had to make concessions with the care portfolio over the past years. "The politics became harder and faster in recent years, and I was part of it. It takes tenacity and perseverance to find really good solutions. My party did not endear itself because we dared to make difficult decision. So that healthcare stays well organized and affordable. We've taken that responsibility consciously."
Bouwmeester wonders whether the next government will be willing to do the same. "I'm worried about the right-wing majority that is taking shape. A cabinet with the CDA, VVD and D66 is a danger to the weaker members of society, who can not save themselves. I wonder if soon they'll be able to keep heads above water. But, who knows, maybe there will be a left-wing majority very quickly."
