Five Steenbergen teens arrested in random street beating
Five teenagers from Steenbergen were arrested this week for randomly attacking and assaulting a 20-year-old man from Oud-Vossemeer during the early hours of Sunday morning, the police said in a statement.
The attack happened around 3:15 a.m. on Sunday. The victim and his girlfriend left the nightlife center over Kaaistraat in Steenbergen. He noticed four boys, greeted them and continued walking.
A short time later he noticed that the boys and two others were following him and his girlfriend. He quickly realized that they had no friendly intention.
The group of teenagers surrounded the couple, shouting insults at them. All of the sudden they attacked the young man. He tried to run away, but was tackled and fell against a pole. The teenagers punched and kicked him as he lay on the ground.
Eventually they ran off, leaving him lying helpless on the ground. The victim stumbled home and called the police. He sustained a broken tooth, bruised ribs, a black eye, bruises and several abrasions on elbows and knees.
The police launched an investigation. On Tuesday they arrested two suspects, aged 16 and 17 years. Questioning and further investigation revealed four more names. Three of them were arrested on Wednesday. The police believes the sixth will be arrested shortly. All suspects are boys between the ages of 15 and 17 years.
