Loose pit bull mauls Syrian girl in Amsterdam

A 6-year-old girl needed surgery after a pit bull attacked her in Amsterdam on Sunday. She sustained several bite wounds in her face and had to undergo surgery, RTL Nieuws reports. The dog was running loose in the garden of a housing complex on Speelmanstraat. The girl came into the garden by crawling through the fence from the open road. The dog attacked her. His owner tried to keep the dog off the girl, but with no success. On Monday afternoon the police could not say much about the girl's condition, only that she is not in life threatening danger, but will likely keep permanent scars on her face. According to newspaper AD, the girl's name is Liana. She's a refugee from Syria. Her brother Yahya (18) told the newspaper that she is making jokes again, but her family hasn't dared let her look in the mirror. "Hopefully the surgeons do their work well. If only it happened to me", Yahya said. "I  might have had a chance. But such a beautiful little girl. She had no chance." A dog handler from the police came to take the dog away, though it is still unclear exactly what will happen to him. A police spokesperson told RTL Nieuws that in similar cases the owner loses custody over the dog and the animal is euthanized.
