Woman killed in base-jumping accident in Limburg town

A 28-year-old woman from Tuege was killed in a base jump from a pylon in the Limburg town of Afferden on Tuesday evening. According to a spokesperson for the police, something went wrong and the woman's parachute didn't open. She died instantly, NU.nl reports. According to Omroep Gelderland, the woman worked as an instructor at the National Paracentrum Teuge. She was base-jumping with three others when the accident happened. The Royal Association for Aviation and the Para Accident Commission are investigating the accident. Base jumping involves jumping with a parachute from high objects, like church towers and masts. It is considered more dangerous than parachuting from a plane, as you don't have a backup parachute because the low height does not allow enough time for it to open.
