New tips in fatal youth worker stabbing; buried in Amsterdam-Oost
The Amsterdam police received several tips about the fatal stabbing of a youth worker in Amsterdam-Oost last week. A "handful" of these tips may be useful, a spokesperson said to RTV Noord-Holland. The victim, 23-year-old Romano Oxford, was buried in Amsterdam Oost on Friday.
The stabbing happened on the corner of Kastanjeplein and Tweede Oosterparkstraat on at around 3:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon. Oxford was rushed to the hospital, where he died of his injuries.
On Tuesday the police arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the stabbing. The circumstances surrounding the shooting is still very unclear. On Friday the police set up a mobile unit on Kastanjeplein in an effort to reach witnesses. "We had dozens of conversations and received a number of tips", a spokesperson said to RTV Noord-Holland.
The 23-year-old youth worker was buried in De Nieuwe Ooster cemetery on Friday. Dozens of people attended his funeral service at Mosque Nasr on Celebesstraat. His family and friends still can not believe or understand what happened, several family members told local broadcaster AT5.
"It's all gone past me. I still can't make sense of it. This is the blackest day of my life", Romano's mother said. His family describes him as a stubborn, but cheerful and helpful boy. "It is an unexpected thing, how can such a person just be taken away?", an uncle said. "He was young, but very wise, the smartest and sweetest actually", a cousin added. "Why such a person? He was not someone who lived on the street, but just went to work everyday and helped other people. And then this happens?"
