In wake of Brexit vote Wilders calls on Dutch to "Nexit"
The Brexit camp won the day and the United Kingdom will be leaving the European Union. PVV leader Geert Wilders is already calling for the Netherlands to follow suit. "Hurrah for the British! Now it is our turn. Time for a Dutch referendum!" he said on Twitter, with the hashtag #ByeByeEU
In a statement on their website, the PVV says that June 23rd, 2016 will go down in history as Britain's Independence Day. "The Europhile elite has been defeated. Britain points Europe the way to the future and to liberation. It is time for a new start, relying on our own strength and sovereignty. Also in the Netherlands", the party writes.
The PVV again points to an EenVandaag poll which showed that a majority of Dutch want a referendum on whether or not to stay in the EU, a so-called Nexit referendum. The PVV is now demanding such a referendum.
"We want to be in charge of our own country, our own money, our own borders, and our own immigration policy." Wilders said in the statement. "If I become prime minister, there will be a referendum in the Netherlands on laving the European Union as well. Let the Dutch people decide."
By 7:00 a.m. on Friday 375 of the 382 UK's voting areas' votes were counted. The Brexit-camp has so many votes that the camp that wants to stay in the EU can no longer catch up. The BBC expects that the Brexit camp will eventually have 52 percent of the votes. A massive 72 percent of British voters cast their votes for the referendum.
