Man crushed by sand mass in fatal Tilburg accident

A man was killed in an accident during work under a sewer pipe on Letostraat in Tilburg on Monday morning. A trench collapsed, causing an avalanche of sand and trapping the man between the pipe and the sand, a police spokesperson said to Omroep Brabant. The accident happened at a transport company on the Vossenberg industrial terrain. The victim was standing in a pit of almost two meters deep when the trench collapsed. The man was buried in the sand. Emergency services rushed to the spot. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the victim, but to no avail. He was declared dead at the scene. The man's family was informed about the accident. His identity will be released later this afternoon. The Inspectorate for Social Affairs and Employment, formerly the labor inspectorate, will investigate what went wrong.
