With reporting by Jacopo Bernardini.
Children playing outside an abandoned house in Arnhem made the surprising discovery of an unexploded 25-pound shell left over from World War II. The British projectile weapon was found in the garden of the house on Sunday afternoon.
An explosives ordinance team was dispatched to the scene in the Gelderland city’s Geitenkamp district. The experts then removed the mortar shell from the location and brought it to a field where they detonated it.
There were no injuries in the resultant blast. It is not known how long the unexploded shell laid dormant at the location where it was found.
