Inspectorate places UMC Utrecht hosp. on warning for poor healthcare
The Healthcare Inspectorate placed the University Medical Center Utrecht under increased supervision last week. According to the Inspectorate, the changes the board of directors proposed to improve the quality of care at the hospital, are not being implemented quickly enough and the increased supervision should help accelerate the pace, NOS reports.
This follows incidents at the hospital's ear nose and throat department that were revealed last year. Current affairs program Zembla reported two fatal incidents that were covered up in the department. And doctors complained of a "culture of fear" that led to “avoidable” and”serious, deadly complications” that endangers the safety of patients.
The increased supervision will last for a maximum of 6 months. UMC Utrecht commented on its website that it will do everything it can to "achieve the necessary improvements".
