Justice Min. survives debate on Brussels Attacks
Ard van der Steur managed to survive the parliamentary debate on the terrorist attacks in Brussels as the Minister of Security and Justice.
The SP, PVv, GroenLinks, PvdD, VNL, 50Plus and Denk don't think Van der Steur is the right man to be in charge of Security and Justice during a time of substantial terror threats and supported a motion of no confidence against him. The Minister survived the motion with the support of the CDA, D66, ChristenUnie and SGP. These parties are critical of his actions, but they believe deposing him won't solve the problems, NU.nl reports.
The parties demand that Van der Steur and Prime Minister Mark Rutte from now on clearly show how they are going about the fight against terrorism. They want the government to address the shortages in the police, especially in the tactical units. And they want to see how the holes in the Ministry of Security and Justice's budget will be plugged.
This is not the first time Van der Steur had to defend himself in front of the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament. He also had to do so because of his actions around MH17 pathologist George Maat, staged photographs of murderer Volkert van der Graaf and in the political aftermath of the so-called Teeven-deal.
