Some 85 percent willing to pay more for sustainable meat
A massive 85 percent of Dutch are willing to pay more for animal-friendly products and sustainable meat. This puts the Netherlands in the top 3 of EU countries, with only Luxembourg and Sweden scoring higher, according to a survey conducted on behalf of the European Union, Dutch newspaper Trouw reports.
The survey was carried out among 27 thousand inhabitants of the 28 EU member states. They were posed a series of questions about animal welfare to give the European Commissions an idea about what people understood about animal welfare, how important they find it and how it affects their shopping behavior.
Approximately half of EU citizens would like more animal-friendly products in stores. A massive 94 percent find the welfare of livestock important and 82 percent feel it should improve.
59 percent of EU citizens are willing to pay more for products that are sustainable and animal-friendly. Luxembourg, Sweden and the Netherlands have the most willing citizens on this field, Portugal, Lithuania and Bulgaria have the least. A massive 70 percent of the Portuguese will not pay more for animal welfare.
Most of those willing to pay more, will be willing to pay 5 percent extra. Five percent was also the most popular answer in the Netherlands. Almost a fifth of Swedes are willing to pay 20 percent extra.
