Schiphol expansion to increase capacity to 80 million passengers

Schiphol shareholders approved the construction of a new terminal and pier at the airport, allowing it to expand to almost 80 million passengers per year, Het Parool reports. The new pier and terminal will be able to accommodate another 16 million passengers per year. Last year 58.5 million people traveled through the airport. According to Schiphol, the new building pier and terminal are sorely needed. The existing eight piers are already overtaxed, causing delays and compromising capacity. Th three terminals area also under increasing pressure. "We are investing to improve and enlarge our infrastructure, quality and accessibility", Schiphol CEO Jos Nijhuis said to the newspaper. "This substantial investment simultaneously forms the foundation for further capacity growth." Nijhuis would not say how much money is going into this project, but according to Het Parool it is around 1.2 billion euros.
