Amsterdam ranked 11th best city worldwide for quality of life
For the third year in the row, Amsterdam made it to 11th place on the Mercer Quality of Living Rankings. Amsterdam is the only Dutch city to make it onto the rankings. Vienna has the highest quality of life in the world, Baghdad has the worst.
Every year Mercer evaluates living conditions in 440 cities world wide based on 39 factors, grouped into 10 categories. Factors include things such as political stability, crime, law enforcement, economic conditions, environment, personal freedom, availability of medical supplies and services, press freedom and school and education standards and availability.
According to Mercer, Western European cities continue to have some of the highest quality of living worldwide. Seven Western European cities are in this year's top ten, including Vienna in 1st place, Zurich in 2nd place and Munich in 4th place.
Paris dropped 10 places to 37th this year, mostly due to the terrorist attacks in the city in January and November last year. London came in 39th place and New York in 44th.
Due to the increasing terrorism threat across the world, Mercer also decided to survey respondents on how safe they feel personally. Amsterdam got 16th place on personal safety. Luxembourg came in first.
