Redesigned Den Haag Centraal train station opens today
A spirit of celebration was on display at the newly-completed Den Haag Centraal train station on Monday. The station, capable of handling 270,000 passengers daily, officially re-opened after several years of construction work.
Den Haag mayor Jozias van Aartsen was joined by Infrastructure Secretary Sharon Dijksma in opening the station, reported newswire ANP. There were performances by several music and dance groups around the station, including Dutch singer-songwriter Ed Struijlaart.
Among the goals of the rebuild included making it feel spacious, bright and uncluttered, making use of a glass roof the size of two football fields, ProRail said in a statement.
Renovations began at Den Haag Centraal in 2011 to ready the track, station and surrounding area for connection to European high-speed train routes. The project involved architects Ben van Berkel, Koen van Velzen and the firm Benthem Crouwel Architects.
