Zwarte Piet protestors called "monkeys and cotton pickers"
A group of demonstrators protesting against Zwarte Piet at the Pietendorp in Enkhuizen on Sunday were met with aggression and insults. According to the activists, some black protesters were called "monkeys and cotton pickers".
The Pietendorp, or Piet Village in English, is an annual attraction at the Zuiderzee Museum. The protestors gathered at the entrance with signs and flags reading "Zwarte Piet is racism".
The activists write in a press release that many parents visiting the village "reacted aggressively" and some even found it necessary to "shove a peaceful demonstrator".
Though not everyone responded badly. The activists managed to start a discussion with a group of angry teens, according to Facebook group Zwarte Piet is Racisme. "After some discussion they understood that the festival is not fun for all children. Especially because one of the, a 14 year old boy from Ghana who has been living in the Netherlands for 9 months, has repeatedly been called Zwarte Piet. The boys went away happy with a couple of Zwarte Piet is racism stickers."
