Wikipedia community to receive Erasmus Prize from Dutch King

King Willem-Alexander will be awarding the Erasmus Prize to the Wikipedia community in the Royal Palace in Amsterdam on Wednesday.  The theme of this year's prize is "Digital culture and the dissemination of knowledge". The prize is being awarded to Wikipedia as a community - the tens of thousands of volunteers around the world working together to shape this initiative. According to the Royal House, the Wikipedia community met this year's theme by facilitating the spread of knowledge by setting up an encyclopedia that is accessible to everyone and by designing and implementing a new and effective democratic form. The award consists of a ash prize of 150 thousand euros. Queen Maxima, Princess Beatrix and Prince Constantijn will also be present at the ceremony. The Erasmus Prize is awarded annually to a person or institution that made a significant contribution in the field of culture, humanities or social interest, each year with a different theme.
