Suspected arson forces apartment evacuation
An apartment building on Goudbaard in Bergen op Zoom had to be evacuated on Monday morning due to a fire in the building's parking garage. The safety office's initial investigation seems to indicate that there were several fire, which leads the police to believe that arson may have been involved.
The fire started around 4:45 a.m. on Monday. The fire department had it under control around 7:30 a.m. A spokesperson for the fire department told newspaper AD that it was a "very large fire" and several of the 35 cars in the parking garage were ablaze.
The fire caused a lot of smoke. Some people were slightly injured due to smoke inhalation. They were taken to the hospital.
All residents of the about 60 apartments in the building had to be evacuated from their homes. They were given shelter in the sports hall De Boulevard. It is not clear when they will be allowed to return to their homes.
The fire brigade advises local residents to keep windows and doors closed and to stay out of the smoke.
