More asylum centers planned for 2 thousand extra refugees
The Netherlands will soon begin with preparing shelter for a total of more than 2 thousand extra refugees coming from Italy and Greece. he two southern European countries are dealing with a massive influx of refugees and need relief. The first of these refugees may arrive in the Netherlands in September.
State Secretary Klaas Dijkhoff of Security and Justice said this in Brussels on Monday night after a meeting with his colleagues about a fairer distribution of about 40 thousand asylum seekers across the European Union, RTL Nieuws reports.
This meeting was arranged because very little progress had been made in the voluntary redistribution of asylum seekers throughout the EU last month. Not all of the EU Member States agreed to taking in refugees arriving in Italy and Greece. So far the EU states have only agreed on relocating 32 thousand of these asylum seekers. The intention is that a solution will be found for the remaining 8 thousand by December.
The European Parliament will examine the whole plan in September. After that the redistribution can begin.
Over the next two years the Netherlands will take in 2,047 extra refugees, as requested by the European Commission. But before this happens, Dijkhoff wants improvements in the registration and fingerprinting of asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants arriving in Italy and Greece.
