Utrecht fines thousands for driving diesel vehicles in city center

Utrecht has issued 4,812 fines to motorists driving in the environmental zone in the city center with too old cars - diesel cars manufactured be for 2001. This is according to RTV Utrecht, based on the city council's responses to questions by the PvdA and CDA. The environment zone covers the city center, the station area, the Jaarbeurs and a number of adjacent roads. At this stage, driving in the environmental zone with a too old car will get you a fine of 90 euros. This amount will later increase to 160 euros. Truck drivers are fined 220 euros. The city council has received a number of complaints that the signs for the environmental zone ins not clearly visible in some places, but the fines still have to be paid. The Rijkswaterstaat is considering putting up signs with route information above the highways around the city.
