King Willem-Alexander starts Drenthe 4 day cycling event
The 50th Drenthe Fiets4daagse, a four day recreational cycling event, began at 8 starting points throughout Drenthe on Thursday. King Willem-Alexander participated for a while, starting in Assen.
The King's presence was obviously a highlight to the public, NOS reports. One mother told her kid to "just wave" as the king cycled by. "Say hi king." This year's event has around 15 thousand participants.
This is not the first time that a royal has participated in a Drenthe Fiets4daagse, even if only for a short while. In 1975 Queen Julian attended the 10th Drenthe Fiets4daagse and Prince Claus cycled along on the 25th edition in 1990.
