Netherlands holocaust museum planned for Amsterdam
Plans for the Netherlands first museum specifically focused on the Holocaust were presented on Tuesday Afternoon.
The National Shoah Museum, referring to the Hebrew term for the Holocaust, is planned to be built in the Hollandsche Schouwburg and the former Hervormde Kweekschool - two historic buildings on Plantage Middenlaan in Amsterdam, NOS reports.
In this new museum, visitors will see the whole story of the Holocaust - from how the Jewish people lived in the Netherlands shortly before the occupation and how they were subsequently persecuted and deported. The museum will also focus on the implication for Jewish families today. The museum is an initiative of, among others, the Jewish Historical Museum.
The museum will be built in two phases. The ground floor of the empty Kweekschool will first be converted into an exhibition space. The National Fund for Peace, Freedom and Veterans Care has donated 1 million euros for this phase. This first phase should be completed in 2018. If enough money has been collected by then, the rest of the Kweekschool and the Hollandsche Schouwburg will be transformed into a permanent museum.
