Dutch reducing food waste at home; eating less meat
More and more Dutch people are doing more to reduce food waste in their homes, like eating less meat and not throwing away leftovers.
This is according to a study done by Motvaction, commissioned by the Voedinscentrum, or Nutrition Center in English.
According to the study, 55 percent of Dutch indicated that they eat meat-free three days per week or more. These so-called flexitarians opt for alternatives such as fish, eggs, mushrooms and legumes to ensure they get enough protein, iron, vitamin B1 and B12.
The vast majority of Dutch people - 84 percent - do not throw away food products that are on or past the best before date. They judge whether the product is still good by smell and taste before throwing it away.
Dutch people also prove to be economical when it comes to leftovers - 80 percent store it in the refrigerator or freeze it to eat later.
