Seven hurt from wind gusts in Amsterdam
One person was seriously injured after a section of wooden boarding fell over on the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam. Six others were wounded Tuesday night when the large boards fell into them, the fire department said.
“It was a short, strong gust of wind,” one witness told broadcaster AT5. The boards landed right at his feet. “I tried to lift up the boards right away, but that was not easily manageable as there was a lot of panic,” he added.
All of those injured were transferred by ambulance to nearby hospitals, the fire department confirmed. “The emergency services were there very quickly. That was almost not normal,“ the witness added. A trauma helicopter landed nearby at Dam Square as a precaution, while eight other ambulances were sent to Kalverstraat.
The incident happened at about 6:50 p.m. A Code Yellow weather warning was issued for the entire country on Tuesday by government meteorologists.
A section of the street, one of the most popular shopping districts in Amsterdam, was “provisionally closed,” the fire department announced.
