Terrorism suspect busted in Maastricht
Police in Maastricht arrested a 26-year-old with Iraqi heritage in an investigation into terrorism, local news site 1Limburg reported. He is suspected of contributing to training for terrorist activities, and was taken into custody late Wednesday night.
The suspect is detained at a police station in Maastricht. A court will hear arguments for his continued confinement on Friday.
His lawyer Serge Weeming was not allowed to remark further than a confirmation of the arrest. “The suspect has been held in restrictive custody. That means that I cannot make any further statements about it now,” the lawyer said. The suspect is facing charges that could put him in prison for up to eight years, Weeming noted.
The Justice Ministry confirmed the apprehension and suspicion, but also cannot provide further commentary at the moment, 1Limburg reported.
