Fugitive Amsterdam jihadist Omar H. dies in Syria battle

The 23 year old Amsterdam jihadist Omar H. was killed in northern Syria during battles with the Kurdish PKK, AD reports. A fellow fighter informed his family about his death. Omar H. left the Netherlands to join ISIS end last year. He managed to get away despite being watched by security forces. In January he was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison, despite the fact that he had already left the country. Sources told AD that H. was killed a week ago in a fight with the PKK. H was seriously injured in the foot when the international coalition bombarded the battlefield. PKK fighters tried to capture H., but he managed to keep them away with hand grenades, according to another Dutch ISIS fighter who also participated in the fight. According to this fighter, H. gave cover fire so that his comrades could retreat and was finally killed by a sniper. This is the same fighter that informed H.'s family of his death. "I congratulated them. It sounds cruel, but I'm happy for him and his family. Omar has obtained the martyrdom that he hoped for." he said to the newspaper. According to the man, Omar, like himself, was part of a contingent of Dutch fighters within the "army of the caliphate". Omar H. has not been officially registered as deceased in the Netherlands as his death can not be conclusively determined.
