Train kills woman stuck on tracks
An unidentified woman, stuck on train tracks as barriers on both sides of the track went down, died on Thursday after she was struck by an oncoming train. The woman had difficulties moving and was using a walker, police said.
She turned the wrong way while the train approached and it hit her. The incident happened at about noon on Soestdijkseweg, north of the Bilthoven station.
The train engineer blasted the horn and hit the brakes to try and avoid a collision. However, the collision could not be avoided and the woman did not survive the impact.
Rail traffic was shut down for almost three hours between Bilthoven and Den Dolder, both in Utrecht province. The line was up and running again by about 3 p.m.
