Strong winds bring trouble to roads, airports
Strong winds blew across the Netherlands for a second straight day, causing trouble on the roads and delays at the airports. The government’s highway and waterway management department, Rijkswaterstaat, said some motorists should stay off the road until the ongoing weather warning is lifted.
“Due to the hard wind with heavy gusts (KNMI code yellow) it is not recommended to go on highways with a caravan or trailer,” the agency said on Twitter just before 9:30 a.m. KNMI, the nation’s meteorological office, predicted wind speeds up to 100 km/h along the coastline on Saturday morning.
By the afternoon, gusts will storm across the country at speeds up to 110 km/h, and 120 km/h at the coast. Rain is also expected in the afternoon.
No flights were cancelled at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam as of 10 a.m., but strong winds caused the delay of several flights both arriving and departing. Air passengers expecting to travel through Amsterdam are advised to check with the airport and airlines for up-to-date information, an airport spokesperson told De Telegraaf.
