High waves toss seals onto Vlieland beach
A storm washed seals off their bank and onto the beach at Vleiland yesterday.
A mother and a pup could be seen crossing the street to reach the safety of the dunes. "It's very windy, there are waves of 2 meters and a lot of noise." André van Gemmert said, describing the situation. Van Gemmert and First Aid for Seals rushed to help the distraught animals yesterday morning.
The washed away seals became panicked and disoriented, but tried to reach higher ground, sometimes having to cross the street. Luckily everything went well and no seals were run over. There are currently a total of 7 or 8 seals taking refuge in the dunes.
The First aid for Seals team will put up signs warning motorists that seals may be crossing the road.
