Police find 575 kilos of fireworks in suburban Rotterdam home
The Fire Department discovered over 20 boxes of fireworks, after extinguishing a brief, but ferocious fire that broke out in a house on Flatusstraat, Capelle aan den Ijssel, on Saturday. The police were contacted upon discovery, and further investigation lead to the discovery of 575 kilograms of illegal fireworks in the 46-year-old resident's home.
A female resident in the home in Flatusstraat smelled smoke that she thought to be coming from the circuit box in her home, the police said in a statement. She fled with her children and called emergency services.
The Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire, and the police searched the premises. The fireworks were confiscated and destroyed. The boxes contained several variants of fireworks like Chinese scrolls, flowerbeds, and batteries.
The suspect was summoned to the police department, and arrested on Sunday morning. He has since been released and is awaiting trial.
Another man, aged 47, from Enschede, has been arrested in relation with the incident, suspected to be the vendor of the confiscated fireworks.
