Dutch prof to lecture in sign language; 1st time in NL

Professor of Dutch Sign Language Beppie van den Bogaerde is going to give a public lecture in sign language at the University of Amsterdam. This will be the first lecture in sign language to be given at a Dutch university. The lecture will happen on Thursday October 9th. Two interpreters will translate her lecture to spoken Dutch. According to Eva Westerhoff, chairperson of the Dovensschap, the University of Amsterdam frequently uses sign language interpreters for the deaf and voice interpreters for the hearing staff and students. "But it is the first time that a voice interpreter is used for someone who can hear. Dutch sign language is not the mother tongue of Beppie. So that makes it special." The lecture will be on sign language.
