Military IT worker investigated for leaks
An reserve officer of the Netherlands military intelligence service reportedly spread confidential material to his civilian employer, ICT company Ordina, from Uruzgan province in Afghanistan in 2009. Television program Zembla reports this on the basis of e-mails obtained.
The officer presented weaknesses in the ICT systems of the G2 information branch of the Army to his superiors at Ordina as commercial opportunities, and informed them about the quality of systems in use by the Army's intelligence service in Uruzgan from his base at Kamp Holland.
Ordina is the company that delivers ICT to the Netherlands Ministry of Defense. In a statement to Zembla, the company claims that the officer had permission from his superiors at the Army to share this information.
Zembla states that in one of the obtained emails named 'Opportunity for Ordina', he wrote: "Gentlemen, I am sending this mail separately to you, seeing as this email contains military and commercial confidential info." He goes further to name the systems in use, and writes of the poor quality of data storage and security.
The Ministry of Defense announces that it has filed a formal complaint against the officer, because he may have violated his vow of secrecy, the NOS reports.
