Identical quadruplets born in Utrecht
Quadruplets were born in the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital in Utrecht last Thursday. The girls came into this world with a Cesarean after seven months of pregnancy.
Mother and daghters, Aukje, Eefje, Hiske and Jinthe are doing well under the circumstances. The girls weighed between 855 and 1040 grams at birth.
The birth of identical quadruplets is extremely rare. Identical twins are born when multiple embryos develop from a single fertilized egg. Those children are genetically identical.
With increasing fertility treatments twins and even triplets are much more common than they used to be.
The only known identical quadruplets in the Netherlands were born twenty years ago in Hardenberg. A television series was created about those four girls, Tessa, Esme, Lisa and Bo.
