Zwarte Piet racism case appealed

The judge's verdict that Zwarte Piet is a 'negative stereotype' is going to be appealed by the 'Pieten guild' in Amsterdam. This verdict was given at the start of July this year. The appeal will be submitted on Wednesday, according to a spokesperson from the guild, Het Parool reports.

The guild says that it represents hundreds of Zwarte Pieten, none of whom seem to be in agreement with the judge or many other protesters of Zwarte Piet, who believe that the caricature negatively stereotypes black people.

The municipality of Amsterdam will soon announce whether they will also appeal the verdict, which also stipulates that the municipality has to review the permit given to the Sinterklaas entrance event last year.

Zwarte Piet's protesters will not appeal the verdict, according to their lawyer.
