Man dies in Maastricht jail

A 44-year-old man died in a jail cell in Maastricht on Thursday afternoon after being picked up by policemen that same day in the city. An investigation will look into the cause of his death, Dagblad de Limburger reports.  On Tuesday morning, police found the man in an intoxicated state on the Cabergerweg in Maastricht. He was responsive, and did not need hospital treatment, but the police did take him into a cell complex. A doctor inspected the man, and concluded that he was able to stay in a cell. Police officers were to check in on him every hour. At around 4 p.m. it seemed that the man had passed out. Officers attempted to reanimate him, but these efforts were in vain. Because the man died in a police cell, the National Police Internal Investigations Department has to investigate the incident. According to the police, the man has no permanent place of residence.
