World War II grenade dredged up in Rotterdam Harbor
A hand grenade from the Second World War was discovered in a dredging ship of the Damen company based in Schiedam yesterday morning. The grenade was pulled out of a harbor during a dredging job. Once the grenade was discovered, all activity at the Wiltonhaven harbor was shut down, and all workers were kept at a distance as the police and the Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were called out from Soesterberg. The hand grenade still had explosive material in it, and was therefore still live. This was determined after the first control. The EOD brought the grenade to a secluded area on the Eerste Maasvlakte plains, and detonated it in a mound of sand.
