Girl, 14, saves toddler from drowning
A 14-year-old girl is being called a hero for rescuing a two-year-old toddler found convulsing in a Rotterdam swimming hole. Amina El Bahmouti was playing in the Kralingen Lake with her girlfriend, 12-year-0ld Sara Chaoubi, when Sara pointed out the struggling boy.In an interview with Metro newspaper, Amina said that Sara noticed the boy’s odd behavior, and thought he was swimming very strangely. “When I looked at him, I saw that it was a baby,” Amina said.
“Water was coming out of his mouth, and he had his eyes closed.”
Amina grabbed the toddler and managed to get him on dry land. Medical students who happened to be on shore worked to resuscitate the boy, while witnesses helped get police to the scene.
“First he was unconscious, but then started to spit a lot of water and crying. A Dutch man called the police,” said Laâziza Ayadi, Amina’s mother.
Pointing out that police are often referred to as “heroes”, one policeman said the attention was misplaced. “…the real heroes are Amina and Sarah. Those girls did a great job!” policeman Sander Boer told Metro.
“I really hope that it goes well with him,” he told newspaper De Telegraaf. “It was pretty scary.”
