Herring comes early this year
The mild winter and early spring means that herring will be coming early this year. Last year, the herring season had to be postponed by two weeks. The first catch made €66,500 that year. The Dutch Fish Bureau (Nederlands Visbureau) announces that good, plump herrings have been spotted on the coast. Herring is fished year-round. The catch of the right, 'volvette' (or full-fat) herring, suitable to be processed into the Hollandse Nieuwe herring is dependent on the period between the end of May and the beginning of July. Hollandse Nieuwe herring is a very Dutch tradition, the first catch of the season is celebrated in many cities by competing for the best-tasting raw herring, which is a competitions from the Algemeen Dagblad. The start of the new herring season has now been determined for Thursday, 12th of June.
