Plundering school treasurer jailed
A former treasurer of Iris, an association for Christian Education in Kampen, was sentenced to 30 months in prison with 12 months probation, for embezzling 3.5 million euros.
The 38-year-old man admitted to the scam. He loaned the money from the association, which manages funds for 14 elementary schools, to business customers of his administrative office who had financial problems. The fraud came to light when the treasurer delegated his duties to his successor.
The fraud took place between early 2007 and October 2012. Between that time the treasurer took money from the association 68 times. The man was already convicted for forgery in 2010, when he was sentenced to 8 months probation.
Another treasurer was just arrested in Portugal after disappearing with 500,000 euros from funeral association "Helpt Elkander."
