Anton Corbijn on Philip Seymour Hoffman's death
The Dutch director of the recently released film 'A Most Wanted Man' mourns the loss of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Corbijn said of Hoffman that he was "the most gifted actor I have worked with."
The director is in Canada for his new film Life, but took a moment to speak about the actor, who was found dead on Sunday in an apartment in Greenwich Village, NY, after an apparent drug overdose. He was 46.
"I am deeply saddened and can't possibly understand what happened today", Corbijn said.
"I'm having difficulty ordering my thoughts. Philip was not only the best actor I have had on my set. But he was also a remarkably inspiring and sympathizing friend.
"This news is a big shock for me, and I suspect for everyone in Hollywood."
Corbijn worked with Hoffman on the film A Most Wanted Man, which is based on a book from author John le Carré, and tells about a Chechen Muslim who illegally immigrates to Hamburg. He gets picked up as a terrorist suspect there.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of the most celebrated modern Hollywood and Broadway actors. His portrayal of Truman Capote won him the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and Independent Spirit Award for Best Actor.
