In December, Amsterdam and three other big Dutch cities – Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht – asked the government to ban scooters from cycle paths and require scooters riders to wear helmets.
But Transport Minister Melanie Schultz told MPs on Wednesday that the government has no plans to ban scooters from cycle paths and requiring riders to wear helmets.
Schultz also said that it not possible legally to require riders to wear helmets.
But the law can be modified to allow Amsterdam run a trial. Amsterdam traffic councillor Eric Wiebe will meet with Schultz to discuss the city’s plans to require scooters riders to wear helmets. They want to find the best solution for the city.
Wiebe said that driving without a helmet is too dangerous for bike riders, who mostly drive at the speed of 25 miles an hour.
