The Amsterdam ArenA is installing about 4,200 solar panels on its rooftop. The football stadium is the home of the football club Ajax.

The solar panels will generate about 930,000 kilowatt-hour (kWh) per year of electricity, equivalent to about 270 Dutch households need every year.
The solar project will cover a surface area of approximately 7,000 square meters, comparable to the size of a football field.
In the Netherlands, the ArenA will be the second largest solar installation on a roof.
“The installation of the solar panels is an important and logical step in realizing a net carbon neutral stadium in 2015," said Henk Markerink, director of the Amsterdam ArenA.
The installation will take place in the first half of 2014. The solar panels prevent the emission of 430 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), as many as 180 cars emit annually.
