Charges on Ajax and Celtic supporters
The riot police (ME) and Amsterdam police carried out charges on Ajax and Celtic soccer supporters Wednesday. The disturbances took place at the Dam. Earlier in the day the fans seemed peaceful in the city and the atmosphere was good. A total of 15 supporters was arrested during the incident. The police, some on horseback, drove the fans into the Damstraat and the Warmoesstraat. The fans threw several stones at the police.
The ME used this method to try and keep fans apart and separated from supporters of other clubs. At the time the Ajax supporters were especially difficult to handle.
Earlier Mayor Van der Laan issued an emergency warrant, allowing individuals who disturb the public order to be removed.
The warrant applied to supporters of the German club St. Pauli, the Belgian club Anderlecht, and supporters of Dinamo Zagreb, who don't have a ticket to the game, but hang around in Amsterdam.
Dinamo Zagreb played PSV Wednesday in Eindhoven. The better part of the city was subjected to the emergency measures. The soccer fans walked around Amsterdam, decked out with their club characteristics, and looking for trouble, according to the police.
