Dutch companies to produce protein from food waste using fly larvae
In Amsterdam, Dutch companies have started a project to use fly larvae to turn food waste into useful animal protein, according to a news report by the Parool.
AEB, animal feed maker Denkavit, engineering company Jagran and and waste processor Sita formed a partnership to undertake the project.
The partnership built a laboratory in the city's western harbour area to experiment with the larvae. The laboratory is located next to AEB's power plants.
The partners plan to produce ingredients for cat and dog food by feeding the larvae food waste.

The partnership’s plan is turn the city’s waste into fly larvae, then to feed the larvae to chickens and then sell the chickens in Amsterdam, according to Walter Jansen of Jagran.
The partnership can decide next year whether to go ahead with large-scale production.
