Heavy Rain Causes Problems

In the whole country, heavy rain has caused many problems, especially in the provinces Zuid Holland, Utrecht and Zeeland. Worst hit by the heavy rains was the Zuid Holland island of Goeree Overflakkee which was flooded by 120mm of rain. This is the same as pouring twelve buckets of water over one square meter and that’s a lot. Flooded basements and streets The fire departments in Zuid Holland, Utrecht, Zeeland, Noord Holland and Gelderland got hundreds of emergency calls. Fallen trees and branches, flooded basements and streets were the main topics. Especially in the area of Rotterdam in the villages of Goedereede, Stellendam and Melissant were many roads flooded. In Rotterdam Zuid a gas pipe subsided. This caused the MRT traffic to a temporarily halt and some houses had to be evacuated. Many accidents happened despite the warnings of the KNMI and the ANWB. For the first time in its existence, Dierenpark Amersfoort had to close the gates because the paths were flooded. The bad news is that the KNMI forecasts, for Monday, that the raining, though less heavy, will go on.
