US: fish death caused by liquids shale gas drilling
Fish mortality in the state of Kentucky, USA, is probably due to fluids used in 'fracking'. That is the drilling technique, used to extract shale gas. After investigation, the U.S. Geological Survey USGS declared Thursday that the fluids most likely caused the widespread death of fish in several waters, including the Acorn Fork river in southeastern Kentucky. The river is home to a rare type of carp, living in small, relatively isolated groups.

Wikimedia commons Damage by the liquids can lead to the destruction of an entire population of fish, according to the Geological Survey. Besides the carp other more general types such as the green sunfish, also suffer from the liquids used in 'fracking'. The fluids leaked from a gas source nearby. The USGS did the research along with the U.S. FWS nature organization. This week, Minister Henk Kamp of Economic Affairs published the results of a study on the potential risks of drilling for shale gas in the Netherlands. It said that the risk of contamination of soil, groundwater, and drinking water is manageable.
