risks drinking water underexposed
In the study, ordered by the Ministry of Economic Affairs on the drilling for shale gas, the risks to drinking water do not get enough attention. That is the conclusion of drinking water company Vitens in response to the research, performed by engineering company Witteveen+Bos.Vitens disagrees with the researchers who claim that to risks of drilling for shale gas are acceptable.
The effects of the drilling have not sufficiently been researched in the specific Dutch situation. Practical research is necessary before any conclusions can be drawn, according to Vitens. Such a study should extensively look into any concerns of water companies. Drilling should only commence after thorough scientific research.
With 5,4 million customers in Friesland, Overijssel, Flevoland, Gelderland, and Utrecht, Vitens is the largest drinking water company in The Netherlands.
