Dutch harbors with ferries to England are increasingly faced with Albanians trying to secretly cross to the United Kingdom, according to the Volkskrant. Over the past few months, hundreds of Albanian stowaways were caught in IJmuiden, Hoek van Holland, Europoort and Vlissingen. 

While the number of caught stowaways is comparable to last year - 440 in the first half of this year - the proportion of Albanians among them is increasing steadily, especially in Hoek van Holland and Europoort. In those two ports 92 percent of the caught stowaways were Albanian.

Dutch nationals in the U.K. considering taking British citizenship in order to avoid complications after the Brexit, must be aware that they will lose their Netherlands passport due to existing limits on dual nationality, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said, according to The Guardian.

The Dutch economy will grow by 2.5 percent this year - the highest growth in a decade, Dutch central bank DNB expects. The economy is doing better in all aspects, but wages are still lagging behind, the bank said in its latest estimate on Monday, NOS reports.

DNB's expectations are rosier than the central planning office CPB's estimates in March. The CPB then predicted economic growth of 2.1 percent. The office is releasing its latest estimates on Wednesday. The Dutch government uses CPB estimates to make its policy.

The official outcome of the election in the United Kingdom on Thursday is still unknown. But it is certain that Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party will lose its absolute majority. While anti-Brexit Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party gained ground. What consequences this will hold for the Brexit is unclear. We'll have to wait and see, is what Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has to say on the matter.

Dutch man Aweys F. is in custody in London on suspicion of planning for a terrorist attack in the city. The 37-year-old man appeared in court on Wednesday, AD reports.

F. was arrested last week, about to board a flight to Istanbul. The British authorities believe that he was planning to join terrorist organization ISIS in Syria. The 37-year-old man has been living in the United Kingdom since 2013. He was born in Somalia, but has Dutch citizenship. In court he confirmed his name, but would say nothing else, according to the newspaper.

Eurostar plans to have a direct train connection between Amsterdam, Rotterdam and London before Christmas, the tranist company announced The trip between Rotterdam and St. Pancras station will take only 3 hours and 15 minutes, and from Amsterdam to St. Pancras will take 4 hours. There will be no stop at Schiphol for the time being, AD reports.

The number of stowaways found trying to sneak to England by ferry and boat decreased significantly compared to last year, according to RTV Rijnmond. In the first quarter of 2017 a total of 220 stowaways were detained at Dutch ports, compared to 360 in the same period last year.

A 27-year-old Amersfoort man was sentenced to 12 years in prison in the United Kingdom for smuggling 939 kilograms of cocaine into the country. Two accomplices, an Irishman and a Briton, were sentenced to 16 years and 14 years respectively by the court in Bristol, AD reports.

The three men were caught on their ship, Bianca, as it sailed into British water in August last year. The authorities found 28 bags of cocaine in the hold. Each bag weighed between 25 and 30 kilograms. The drugs had a street value of some 84 million pounds, or 98 million euros.

The Dutch tax authorities' investigative service FIOD received details of 3,800 Dutch with hidden assets and savings in Swiss bank accounts from an anonymous source, AD reports. Based on this information, FIOD launched an international hunt for Dutch tax evaders on Thursday.

According to the Tax Authorities, the details about hidden assets in Swiss bank accounts can be compared to the Panama Papers that leaked last year. All 3,800 Dutch-linked accounts are with one Swiss bank, which the Dutch authorities would not name.

A group of school pupils from Bergen op Zoom witnessed a terrorist attack in London on Wednesday afternoon. Five people were killed and around 40 injured when a man crashed his car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, crashed into the Westminster Palace gate, got out and stabbed a police officer, the Telegraaf reports.

Dutch banks ING and Amsterdam Trade Bank are listed with 730 other banks as financial institutions that helped Russian criminals launder money, international investigative journalist collaboration OCCRP revealed. A total of 19 billion dollars were laundered through these 732 banks between January 2011 and October 2014, according to the group, AD reports.

Shell sold 3.8 billion dollars in assets off the British Coast on the North Sea to oil company Chrysaor, the Dutch oil and gas giant announced on Tuesday. This sale forms part of a Shell divestment program, in which the Dutch company wants to get rid of some 40 billion dollars worth of assets, the Telegraaf reports.

A 31-year-old man from Amsterdam is in custody in England on suspicion of trafficking 12 kilograms of cocaine. He will remain in custody until his case goes to trial in April, Het Parool reports.

The man in question is Kevin B., a defender for the Amsterdam Crusaders - an American football team. On December 27th he flew from Breda to the Biggin Hill Airport in London where customs found 12 kilograms of cocaine in his luggage. According to the local authorities, that amount of cocain has a street value of converted 1.6 million euros in England.

The Netherlands, Belgium, France and United Kingdom reached an agreement on implementing passport controls on large international trains. A joint task force will be established to discuss this with Thalys and Eurostar, ANP reports.

The task force will also work on introducing better passenger lists for international high-speed trains. The intention behind this it so that security services can make sure no wanted criminals are on the train.
